echoes: a tribute to the whale and the sea
'echoes' is a tribute to the whale and the sea with references from old whalers combined
with a look at "modern whaling"
- floating waste in the sea.
'echoes' uses volume as a design tool to explore how volume can be concealed
and expanded -
both in clothing and body. It draws design references from those closest to the whale - sailors and
fishermen, as well
as the corset makers of the 17th-18th centuries who used whalebones in their creations.
(IN)VISIBLE: Your attention is drawn toward an unexpected light
It's a person shining. Not just a small part of the outfit, but the whole outfit is
illuminated. The light changes as
you and the person continually move closer to each other. Once you are close enough, you see the depth in
the light – several layers of light. A play of texture, shapes, and lines. A tiny world inside the outfit.
Illag: exploring layers
Layers prompt questions about layers, regarding how many layers a person has both on the
outside and inside, and what
constitutes the core of us.
The layers in the garment might remind one of contour lines on a map, the layers
in an
architectural model - and somewhat of an oyster. Details from the world in micro and macro perspective.
